Clarify Your Message

How to Be a Good Podcast Guest

Do you want to be a guest on a podcast? Being on a podcast is a great (and fun) way to share your message, wisdom, and encouragement with a broader audience. It can be intimidating at first, but with some preparation and research, it can be meaningful and energizing for both listeners and guests.

One of the things I most enjoy is hosting The Writers Bloc Podcast. This podcast is an overflow of the work that happens inside my writing community, where we interview writers, creatives, and entrepreneurs inside The Writers Bloc.

Our goal in all our teachings is to encourage Christian writers in the art and heart of writing.

Do you have a message or encouragement you’d like to share with my audience?

Pitching a podcast isn’t about selling yourself—it’s about discerning whether your message, season, and heart align with the audience you’d be serving.

Here are some things to consider…

Find the Right Fit

A good marketing rule of thumb is to hang out where your ideal reader/audience is. To get the most out of your podcast appearance, you must have or want to reach a complementary audience. The Writers’ Bloc Podcast is geared toward Christian women writers, but some of my favorite interviews have been with men and entrepreneurs who serve writers and creatives. We’re looking for guests who can speak to our two main pillars: the art and the heart of writing.

  • The Art of Writing

The art of writing includes topics that help writers with the external work of writing, including improving their craft, distilling their calling, and marketing to their channels

  • The Heart of Writing

The heart of writing includes topics that support writers in the internal heart-work of writing, such as cultivating our inner lives, courageously offering our words to the world, and abiding in communion with Jesus.

Do Your Research

Spend some time getting to know the podcast you’re interested in being a guest on. Listen to a few episodes and consider the show’s flow, style, and format. Does your topic match well with the show, audience, and vibe? Have they covered your topic before? Consider how you offer a unique angle or twist to a topic that might be common, but has not been explored before.

Write a Pitch

When you’ve completed your research and have formulated your idea, write a thoughtful email to the podcast host. If you have samples of previous interviews, include those in your pitch. The best and most enjoyable guests are those who desire to give rather than receive. We want to help writers sell their books, but more than that, we want you to encourage our listeners and establish yourself as an authority on your topic. Focus on what you have to offer. Book sales are gravy.

Be Open to a Pre-Interview

To ensure we’re a good fit for one another, expect a few emails and perhaps a pre-interview as part of our process. For guests who wish not only to conduct an interview but also to deliver subsequent teachings to our paid audience, we offer a free 6-month membership to the Writers’ Bloc. We’ll reach out to you and see if that’s an option.

Prepare for the Interview

Every interview is a little different, but we’ll work with you beforehand to develop a set of questions for our interview. It’s helpful if you can help guide that process and give us some questions that you’d like us to ask. Otherwise, we’re happy to collaborate on that process. Spend some time preparing your answers.

Share a Resource

While it’s certainly not required, if you have a resource our audience would enjoy, we’d love to help you share it. This can be as simple as a free download, a discount code, or ways to continue engaging with your work. At the end of our interview, and in our show notes, we’ll be sure to include those links.

Market Your Episode

It’s helpful when guests help market their episodes. Share it with your networks, and follow on social media. The best gift to a podcast is reviews. Leave a 5-star review, and you’ll automatically give your episode wings to fly!

If this resonates with you, you’re likely a good fit, and we’d love to hear from you. You can begin by filling out this form
