Several years ago, when our kids were little, we took them to the Grand Canyon. On our drive, we talked about the beauty, the colors, and the magnitude of what they were about to behold. But we also warned them. The edge is slippery, and the rocks can give way under your feet. There are some places along the rim without railings, and some people do crazy things just to capture a picture. A careful parent is vigilant to ensure their children’s safety. They don’t simply trust the railing to keep their children safe—they hold their hands and never let them out of their sight.
Dangers abound in the Grand Canyon, and in our spiritual lives as well. To be spiritually vigilant means we are on the lookout for both overt and hidden dangers. We don’t foolishly test the safety railings to see how much weight or force we can apply and stay alive. Rather, we respect the railings and add our own discernment. We remain watchful and sober-minded by staying in his Word, and communing with him in prayer.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus warned his disciples to be alert to temptation. They were weak in their flesh and needed to stay awake and pray. Are you awake to the potential spiritual missteps and temptations that surround you? Use these 20 verses to start your study on spiritual vigilance.

Don’t trust the railings, trust the Lord
To be spiritually vigilant is to be watchful and alert to the dangers around you. When you visit the Grand Canyon, you respect the edge and take precautions to avoid falling over it. As believers, we need to remember how spiritually deadly it is to be unaware of the dangers around us. We don’t want to fall and injure ourselves or others.
Remaining vigilant isn’t about operating out of fear but out of faithfulness. Unlike the disciples in Gethsemane, we want to keep watch, pray, and overcome temptation. We want to honor the Lord with our eyes wide open.
Friends, stay awake and pray. Don’t put your trust in railings, but in the Lord your God and his Word.
He will never let you fall.
