20 Bible Verses About Comfort in Affliction

God weaves every thread in our suffering

As believers living on the resurrection side of the cross, we read the gospel accounts knowing the story has layers. When Jesus hung on the cross, enduring all its mockery, scorn, and shame, it appeared that evil had triumphed. But in the most stunning reversal of all time, Jesus defeated death and lives forevermore. What Satan meant for evil, God used to triumph over him, sin, and death forever. In God’s all-knowing, all-wise, and all-sufficient plan, Jesus’ affliction became our comfort.

No matter what afflictions you face today, the greatest comfort you can have in this life is knowing that Jesus Christ has paid for your debt of sin in full. This is the good news! While God met our greatest need at the cross, he also comforts us in every other need. His Word assures us that our suffering works on multiple levels to accomplish God’s purposes. Your hardships aren’t just for your growth and sanctification, but quite possibly for those around you, too. Jesus, who suffered for us and was tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sin, is able to sympathize with our weakness and comfort us in our affliction.

How can you find God’s comfort in your affliction? Open his Word, read it, and meditate on it. There you’ll find the assurance of his presence, his faithfulness, and his unfailing love. These 20 Bible verses are just a starting place for discovering the God of all comfort.

God is Weaving Something

When I’m suffering or being afflicted, and I don’t understand why, I remember that God is weaving something I can’t see yet. Just as there were layers to what God was accomplishing through Jesus’ suffering, there are layers to our suffering, too. We often see only the tangled threads, not the beautiful tapestry God is weaving. A poem called “The Weaver,” often attributed to hymn writer Grant Colfax Turner and popularized by Corrie ten Boom, beautifully captures this truth.

My life is but a weaving
Between my God and me.
I cannot choose the colors
He weaveth steadily.
Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow;
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I the underside.
Not ‘til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Will God unroll the canvas
And reveal the reason why.
The dark threads are as needful
In the weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned
He knows, He loves, He cares;
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives the very best to those
Who leave the choice to Him.

May the God of all comfort remind you of these truths today. You may not see what he is doing through your affliction, but you can trust the one who is holding every thread.
