You’ve probably heard the song “Have Yourself a Me

You’ve probably heard the song “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” hundreds of times. It’s a tender song that pulls on our heartstrings for peace, togetherness, and ease of trouble.

But did you know that song was released in 1944, during WWII, when many soldiers were leaving behind the comforts of home for the ravages of war? The song points to a future hope that “From now on, our troubles will be out of sight.”

There’s another song in the Bible that also points to a future hope. It’s the song Mary sang when the good news of Jesus’ birth was shared with her.

Both of these songs point to the ache that often accompanies Christmas. But only one of them anchors us in the upside-down nature of our hope, independent of circumstances.

Here’s my hot take on taking takes 🔥🎬

Who knew that recording a two minute video would be so much work…and require so much lighting?! 🤯

This process of has stretched me and I’ve been less than gracious with myself about it.

I’ve been rewatching my takes and critiquing just about every imaginable flaw I can see. My hair looks too thin, I feel less than svelte, my face has more wrinkles than it used to, I don’t like this angle, my voice is not strong, and my list goes on and on.

I feel awkward outside my comfort zone (behind my computer) in this new season of being in front of a camera.

Writing lets you massage every word, until it’s nearly perfect. But I can keep doing video takes until I’m blue in the face, and I don’t think I’ll ever be satisfied. There’s always something I think could be improved.

Maybe I’m a perfectionist (probably true). Or maybe I’m not immune to the unrealistic beauty standards of our culture (definitely true).

But probably what’s most true is that I sometimes forget whose book this is that I’m promoting. Whose glory I want to highlight and point others to. And who has carried me through all the hundreds of other uncomfortable moments that I never thought I’d get past, and will carry me through again.

As much as this makes me uncomfortable, I’m grateful for the opportunity to give glory to God for helping me write this book, and now to promote it so that others will be transformed in their own #pursuitofholyleisure.

With his help, I’ll get out of my own way, and out of my own head, and trust that he uses the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. I’ll be a fool for Christ any day…even if it’s on camera for all to see.

So I’ll do it imperfectly for him because he’s worthy. It won’t be perfect, but that’s ok. He does his best work with imperfect.

Here’s to taking takes, taking risks, and getting uncomfortable for his glory! 🎬
