Have you ever heard someone refer to their work or their role as their calling? We often recognize calling in someone else’s life but hesitate to claim it for ourselves. It may seem too grand for the quiet, everyday work of raising kids, answering emails, or caring for aging parents. We may wonder: Is this really my calling, or just my responsibility?
Our culture equates calling with visibility or vocation, something big, spiritual, or extraordinary. However, biblically speaking, “calling” often refers to our salvation and union with Christ. Paul reminds believers that God “called [you] into the fellowship of his Son” (1 Cor. 1:9), and Peter writes that we are a people who have been “called…out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Pet. 2:9). This is our primary calling: to belong to Christ.
But from that primary calling flow secondary callings—the specific roles and work we’re assigned in this life. This type of calling is often a deliberate choice for a particular ministry or service, and we see this illustrated many times in Scripture.

Extraordinary callings through ordinary means
Often we think of receiving our calling as a dramatic encounter with God…like Moses receiving his call from a burning bush, or Paul receiving his call (and temporary blindness) on the road to Damascus. While God can use extraordinary measures to call His people to His purposes, our callings are usually far less dramatic. More often, God leads us through ordinary means, such as our desires, gifts, opened doors, and the needs around us, to a work He’s prepared for us.
So what is God calling you to do? If you’ve already been called out of darkness and into the light, you’ve answered the primary call of salvation. Now, work out your secondary calling in whatever context he’s placed you to share the good news and make his name known.
The one who called you is faithful, and he will finish the good work he began in you (Phil. 1:6). This is the ordinary and extraordinary work of God’s call.
