Rarely a day goes by when I don’t feel some level of anxiety. My trust in God is threatened as I sort through reasonable and far-fetched fears. In those moments when I’m anxious, I’m unsure which is which—my fears all seem plausible or inevitable. Plus, my worries can cross borders at lightning-fast speed. One minute, my fears remain close to home; the next, they spread across state and international lines. Perhaps you know the feeling. There’s no shortage of things to be anxious about and places besides God to put our trust.
Jesus knows that our soul’s default condition is to be anxious, yet he said, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?” (Matt 6:25-26). The answer to our fears is not to try to fix the things we’re worried about but to look to God. Why do we feel anxious and not trust God? Because we’re not seeing things correctly. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6 that we’re not to be anxious because of the character of our Father. If he cares for his creation, which isn’t created in his image, how much more will he care for you and me (verses 27-32)? Our ability to trust God comes down to our ability to see him more clearly.
And what are we to see? Jesus said, “Look at the birds,” as a reminder of the trustworthiness of our heavenly Father. Did you know there are approximately 400 billion birds in the world? Think about that for a minute, 400 Billion! If God can feed all those birds, will he not take care of you? Look to the birds, and then look to his Word. It’s there you’ll find that he is infinitely trustworthy.

The answer to our anxiety
If you’re anxious, Jesus doesn’t simply say, “Stop it.” He tells you where to look to find peace. Look at the birds and the flowers, and you’ll conclude that if God actively cares for his creation, he will care for you, too. Instead of worrying, you must trust he already knows what you need.
The answer to our anxiety is to get our eyes off our fears and onto God. Instead of looking only at what could go wrong or what is going wrong, we’re to set our gaze higher. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matt 6:33-34).
Open the Word and look. He is worthy of your trust.
