20 Bible Verses For Overcoming Doubt

What if?

Sometimes we’re prone to doubt where we feel something is lacking—resources, happiness, or control over a situation. But consider that in the garden of Eden, where our first parents had everything they could want and more, the enemy prompted them to sin by inserting doubt into their perfect world. He couldn’t tempt them through the front door by promising them a better life, more stuff, or greater dominion—that would’ve been impossible. Instead, he snuck through the back door, tempting them to doubt what they knew was true about God.

Doubt is an inner-wrestling between faith and unbelief. It comes in many forms, but perhaps we know it best by the “What if” questions it raises in our minds. What if God has forgotten? What if the suffering doesn’t stop? What if I don’t have what I need when I need it? Instead of clinging to what we know is true, we fill in the gaps with the age-old sin of doubt. In the case of Adam and Eve, the temptation was to doubt what God had said and his character. When Satan asked “Did God actually say…?” he was implying, “What if God is a liar and he’s withholding something good from you?”

We live in a fallen world filled with doubt, and as Christians, we might wrestle with things we don’t know, feeling plagued by “what ifs.” Perhaps a level of doubting is helpful—it keeps us on the lookout for danger. But the kind of doubt that targets our faith and wants us to believe lies should be met with the full resistance of God’s Word.

We can overcome doubt by challenging this type of disbelief with truth. Our faith strengthens, and we comprehend God’s character as we engage with his Word. Think about printing these 20 verses and memorizing them to help you the next time you face doubt.

Ask Better What ifs

‘What if’ questions aren’t bad. Sometimes they help us arrive at the correct conclusion as we logically work through our fears. So what if we turned those back door attacks on their head, and fought them head on with the Word of God? When that insidious liar hisses in our ears, tempting us to believe what’s not true about God, we can test what he says against the Word of God. We can challenge ourselves with better “what if ”questions. “What if God is trying to show me something of his character through this trial? What does God’s Word say about this? What if God is working this together for my good (Rom 8:28)?

What if your doubts, no matter how overwhelming they may be, are no match for God? You can overcome doubt by taking your thoughts to him and testing them with his Word. He is worthy of your faith and trust.

Fighting with you,
